What happened to 22seven?

Vault22 Editorial TeamUpdated

The short answer

22seven is now Vault22. On 31 October 2024, the money app South Africans had used since 2012 became Vault22, bringing 22seven together with Autumn, a platform from SC Ventures. Our vision hasn’t changed; to see all your money in one place. Now, there’s more help that enables you to decide what comes next.

Is 22seven still around?

Yes, as Vault22. 22seven launched in January 2012 to help South Africans see all their money in one place. Old Mutual bought that platform in 2013, and on 31 October 2024 it combined with Autumn, a platform incubated by SC Ventures, Standard Chartered’s venture arm, which became Vault22. If you go looking for 22seven today, Vault22 is where you’ll land.

Why did 22seven become Vault22?

Because seeing your money is only the start. People told us they wanted more than a record of what they’d spent: they wanted to know what it meant, and what to do next. Vault22 brings your spending, budgets, debt, savings and investments together, so you can see how each part of your financial life affects the others, then make your next move with a clearer view.

What wasn’t good enough during the change?

We’ll be straight about this. Moving from 22seven to Vault22 took longer and was rougher than it should have been. During that period:

  • Some bank connections stopped updating, and fixing them took too much effort on your side
  • Getting help from our support team was harder than it should have been
  • The app didn’t always perform the way you needed it to

If you left during that time, we understand why. You trusted us with a clear view of your money, and for a while we didn’t hold up our end.

What’s different now?

A new team, and a renewed focus on the basics that matter most to you:

  • We’re talking to you. We interview customers regularly, asking what works, what doesn’t and what they’d change. It’s already shaping what we build.
  • We improve the app every week. The app and Tara, the AI guide inside it, are updated weekly, based on what we hear.
  • We’re fixing the foundations first. Reliable connections and responsive support come before new features.

What can you do in Vault22 today?

Everything you used 22seven for, with more around it:

  • See clearly: link your accounts and see your spending, budgets, debt and savings together
  • Budget your way: set budgets for the categories that matter to you and see what’s left as the month goes on
  • Act on debt: see what you owe and compare ways to pay it down, with the debt calculator
  • Build what matters: save towards goals, and explore investing when you’re ready, including Shariah-compliant options
  • Plan together: Family lets you share the goals and accounts you choose with a partner or family, and keep the rest private
  • Ask Tara: get help understanding your money in plain language, based on your own financial picture
  • Compare options: browse financial products from South African providers in the Marketplace
