How to compare credit cards in South Africa

Vault22 Editorial Teamthe Vault22 team · Published

The short answer

Compare credit cards on four things before rewards: the interest rate you’d actually be charged, the monthly and initiation fees, the interest-free period on purchases, and what the card asks of you to qualify. Rewards only add value if you clear the balance each month, so start with cost.

What should you compare first?

Start with what the card costs to hold and to use. The advertised rate is a ceiling, not a promise: the rate you’re offered depends on your credit profile, and it appears in the quote you receive before you sign.

What to compare Why it matters Where to find it
Interest rate The rate you’re offered is personal and can differ from the advertised one. Your pre-agreement quote
Monthly service fee Charged whether or not you use the card. The provider’s pricing guide
Initiation fee A once-off cost when the account opens. The provider’s pricing guide
Interest-free period Usually only applies if you pay the full statement balance. The product terms
Qualifying criteria Decides whether you can apply at all. The product page

Once those four line up, look at what’s left: rewards, travel benefits, and how the card works with the accounts you already have.

How does credit card interest work?

Interest is charged on the balance you carry past the due date. If you pay the full statement balance, most cards charge no interest on purchases for that period. If you pay part of it, interest usually applies from the transaction date. See prime lending rate for how rates move over time.

Worth knowing

Two people applying for the same card can be offered different rates. Compare quotes, not advertised maximums.

Your options

There isn’t a best card, only a better fit for how you use credit. Three honest starting points:

A low-fee card Fewer extras, lower ongoing cost. Can suit you if you sometimes carry a balance and want to keep the cost of that down.

A rewards card More benefits, usually higher fees. Tends to add value only if you pay the full balance every month and use the rewards.

No card, for now A debit card and a savings buffer. Worth considering if the main reason for a card is covering surprises. A buffer does that without interest.

Where Vault22 fits, and where it doesn’t

The Vault22 marketplace shows credit cards from leading South African providers side by side, so you can compare fees and criteria in one place. It doesn’t list every card in South Africa, and it can’t tell you the rate you’ll be offered. For that, you’ll need a quote from the provider.

Questions people ask

An application usually creates a credit enquiry on your credit report. One enquiry tends to have a small effect, while several applications close together can have more. Checking your own credit report doesn’t count against you.

A store card is issued by a specific retailer and can only be used at that retailer or its retail group. Store cards typically have lower credit limits than bank credit cards, and their interest rates can be higher. Many come with member discounts or deals.

Lenders have to check you can afford the credit before approving it. What they accept as proof of income varies, so if you don’t get a payslip, ask the lender what they’ll take instead, such as bank statements.

There’s no single right number. How you manage your cards matters more: paying on time has the biggest impact on your credit score, and using a large share of your available credit can lower it. Each new card also means another application and credit enquiry.
