Best budgeting apps in South Africa (2026)

Vault22 Editorial Teamthe Vault22 team · Updated

The short answer

If you want your spending, debt, savings and household in one place, start with Vault22. It’s free and connects to South African banks. If all your money sits at one bank, its app may be enough. If you follow a strict method like zero-based budgeting, YNAB or Goodbudget suit, with manual imports.

Which budgeting apps work in South Africa?

We compared seven apps South Africans use on four things: whether they connect to South African banks, what they cost, the budgeting method they follow, and what else they cover.

App Best for South African bank sync and cost
Vault22 Seeing spending, debt, savings and household in one place Connects to 100+ South African institutions. Free plan, plus Basic and Premium
FinWise A focused, paid budgeting and tracking app Connects to South African banks. One paid plan after a 14-day trial
Your bank’s app Tracking spending at a single bank That bank’s accounts only. Free with your account
YNAB A strict zero-based budgeting method South African accounts need file imports. Paid, in US dollars
Goodbudget Envelope budgeting by hand Manual entry for South African accounts. Free plan, or paid in US dollars
Actual Budget Open-source budgeting you control yourself Manual entry or file imports. Free software; you pay for hosting if you self-host
A spreadsheet Full control and privacy Manual entry or statement imports. Free

We make Vault22, so it’s listed first. We’ve applied the same checks to it as to every other app, including where it falls short.

App by app

Here’s what each app does well, and what to know before you choose.

  • Vault22: links your bank accounts, cards, loans and investments, then helps you budget from payday, compare debt payoff plans, save towards goals and plan with your household through Family Circle. Tara helps you understand your options.
  • FinWise: a South African-built app for budgeting, net worth and forecasting, with multi-currency support. There’s no free plan after the trial.
  • Your bank’s app: FNB, Absa, Capitec and Nedbank all offer budgeting tools inside their apps. They’re free and accurate, but only see that bank’s accounts.
  • YNAB: a well-known method where every rand gets a job. Its bank sync doesn’t cover South African banks, so you import files.
  • Goodbudget: digital envelopes you fill and spend from. The free plan is manual, and bank sync on Premium covers US banks only.
  • Actual Budget: open-source, local-first budgeting with strong rules and reports. It takes more setup than a typical app, and South African accounts come in through file imports.
  • A spreadsheet: free and fully yours, but every transaction is entered or imported by hand. Many people run one alongside an app.

Bank support changes often, so check each app’s own list for your bank before you subscribe.

Worth knowing

22seven became Vault22 in October 2024. If a roundup recommends 22seven, it’s describing an earlier version of Vault22.

How do bank connections work?

Most budgeting apps connect to your bank through a data provider that reads your transactions. Before you link an account, check four things.

  • The access is read-only, so the app can’t move money
  • Your bank is on the app’s supported list
  • How often accounts refresh, since some free plans update weekly
  • Whether you can export your data and close your account

Connections can lag or break when a bank changes its systems. That’s true of every app that links to banks, including ours, so it helps to know your other options.

If you’d rather not link

Upload a statement instead. Vault22 and YNAB both accept bank files, or keep a spreadsheet you control.

What mistakes do people make when choosing?

Most people who give up on a budgeting app do it for one of four reasons.

  • Choosing on features, not habits: the best app is the one you’ll actually open each week
  • Paying in dollars: several global apps price in US dollars, so the cost moves with the rand
  • Assuming sync works everywhere: some popular apps only connect to US or European banks
  • Linking everything on day one: start with your main account and build the picture from there

How to choose

Start with what you want the app to do for you.

See everything together Spending, debt, savings and household. Vault22 or FinWise. Vault22 adds debt plans, investing, Family Circle and Tara, and starts free.

Follow a strict method Every rand gets a job. YNAB or Goodbudget, if you don’t mind importing files or entering spending by hand.

Keep it simple One bank, or full control. Your bank’s app if all your money is in one place, or a spreadsheet if you want everything in your hands.

Where Vault22 fits, and where it doesn’t

Vault22 connects to 100+ South African institutions and brings your spending, budgets, debt, savings and investments into one view, with Family Circle for your household and Tara to help you understand your options. Free is a complete app, not a trial. Basic and Premium add daily updates and your full history.

It may not be the right fit if all your money sits at one bank and its app already does what you need, or if you want a strict zero-based method. And like every app that links to banks, a connection can sometimes lag behind your bank.

Questions people ask

It depends on what you need. Vault22’s Free plan connects unlimited accounts and covers budgeting, debt and savings. Goodbudget’s free plan suits manual envelope budgeting, and most bank apps include free budgeting tools for that bank’s accounts.

22seven became Vault22 in October 2024. If you used 22seven, you can still link your accounts and budget from your real spending, and you can now also plan debt, invest, share with your household and ask Tara.

Vault22 and FinWise both connect to South African banks, and each bank’s own app covers its accounts. Global apps such as YNAB and Goodbudget don’t sync South African banks, so you import files or enter spending by hand. Check each app’s supported list for your bank.

Check that the access is read-only, so the app can’t move money, and see which data provider connects your bank. If you’d rather not link, several apps, including Vault22 and YNAB, accept statement uploads instead.

No. Vault22’s Free plan, Goodbudget’s free plan, your bank’s app and a spreadsheet all cost nothing. Paid plans usually add more frequent updates, longer history or bank sync.
